A sumi-e workshop at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (The Center), San Francisco. Sunday, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM. Paint an autumn chrysanthemum in the traditional ink brush style. Fees: $60 Center members, $75 general public.

A six-week class at the Richmond Art Center. Thursdays, 4:30–6:30 PM (6 sessions). An introduction to the fundamentals of Japanese ink brush painting — brushwork, ink tones, line quality, and composition — for students new to sumi-e.

An eight-week class at the Richmond Art Center. Thursdays, 2:00–4:00 PM (8 sessions). For students with brush-painting experience, developing more advanced subjects and expressive techniques.

A one-day workshop at Studio 55 Martinez. Sunday, 2:00–4:00 PM. An all-levels introduction to the "Four Treasures" of sumi-e — brush, ink, inkstone, and paper — and how each shapes the character of an ink painting.

A one-day workshop at Studio 55 Martinez. Sunday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM. Paint the chrysanthemum — one of the Four Gentlemen of traditional brush painting — from petals to leaves, building brush control and composition.

A one-day workshop at Studio 55 Martinez. Sunday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM. An all-levels session painting the vegetables and fruits of autumn in ink and soft color.

A six-week class at Studio 55 Martinez. Wednesdays, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM. Bamboo is one of the Four Gentlemen of traditional East Asian brush painting and an ideal subject for beginners. Students learn fundamental brush techniques, ink control, line quality, composition, and the expressive use of empty space.
